On October 26th, Nancy Kavanagh and I visited Equine Guelph, Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) at the University of Guelph, on behalf of the Equine Foundation. We were greeted by Andrew Moore from the OVC Pet Trust, who organized the visit and donation. The Equine Foundation had chosen to purchase a new "super computer" for the research centre. This computer will be utilized by Dr. Viel, a world leader in equine pulmonary research. Dr. Viel spent time with us demonstrating his work, and we witnessed a pulmonary test first hand with the help of "Frosty". This computer will be used in the diagnosis of equine pulmonary disease. It is incredible that with the specialized equipment invented by Dr. Viel, horses as young as yearlings can be tested for the likelihood of developing equine pulmonary disease later in life.

We then met with Gayle Ecker, who is involved in the promotion and education component of Equine Guelph. Gayle discussed ongoing promotional events and success with programs such as "EquiMania". They have also developed new educational programs such as the Equine Business Management and Equine Industry Skills programs.

Following our meeting with Gayle, we were treated to a tour of OVC, and even peeked in on a couple of surgeries. It was fascinating. As we toured the facility we became more aware of the importance of donation funds to teaching hospitals and research centres such as Guelph.

The University expressed thanks to the Equine Foundation and has extended an invitation to the CMHA to visit and tour OVC.
